Description
Also known as Dorcus parallelipipedus, this curious little insect is a distant relative of Europe's largest beetle, Lucanus cervus (European stag beetle). Much smaller than the European stag beetle, this specimen can reach about 3 cm in length (one in the image above was about 2.5 cm long), and males can be distinguished from females by having knobbed antennae and posessing slightly larger mandibles. Not sure how painful their bite is, I didn't want to test it on myself XD
